Anna Netrebko debuted the role of Abigaille last night in a concert performance of Verdi’s Nabucco at the International May Festival in Wiesbaden. The bravos began after her first entrance and continued until and during the standing ovation at the end. Süddeutsche Zeitung declared Anna Netrebko “more than convincing,” with singing “which soften stones,” adding that “Her last great aria with the plea for forgiveness is the artistic and human event of this evening.”. Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung wrote that Anna Netrebko “lent the part all her vocal abilities and revealed interesting facets about this evil character…One remarked Netrebko’s well-developed lower register, her perfect voice and her appealing timbre…The dramatic climaxes came across as powerful, but never, as often heard in this part, repulsively shrill and out of control.” The second and last performance will take place tomorrow, May 7. Staged performances of Nabucco will be announced in future seasons.
