On Wednesday at the Staatsoper Berlin, Anna made her stage debut as Abigaille in Verdi’s Nabucco. Irrespective of its bel canto roots, it is a role so perilous in its vocal demands that it can challenge the greatest voices. Not Anna. The collective and immediate roar of applause and bravos following the second part of Abigaille’s monumental aria in Act II was visceral. As have been the reviews: “Nobody sings like that anymore. Except for one” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). “What Netrebko does with this vocally extreme role of Abigaille, one of the most difficult in opera literature, is simply phenomenal.” (Die Zeit). “Is there anything Anna Netrebko’s voice can’t do?” (Tagesspiegel). The remaining performances on October 6, 9 and 12 are sold out.
