The 17th annual Echo Klassik Awards will be held on October 17, 2010 at the home of the Essen Philharmonic in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. German radio and television personalities Sabine Heinrich and Matthias Opdenhövel will host. Since their inception in 1992, the Echo Awards have been given to the world’s top performers in both pop and classical music. For the 15th year in a row, the awards will be broadcast on German’s ZDF channel.

  • Critics praise Anna Netrebko’s Manon at Covent Garden

    Published: 30 June 2010

Anna Netrebko’s performance in Laurent Pelly’s new production of Manon at the Royal Opera House has received unanimous acclaim from London critics. “Anna Netrebko is a striking Manon,” wrote The Evening Standard. “Pelly has his lechers circle her, gasping with admiration but groping like predators. Netrebko’s Manon has them in the palm of her hand, her control underlined by her formidable vocal delivery, complete with stratospheric E flat.” The Telegraph declared that Netrebko “gives herself wholeheartedly to Manon...and sings with polish and precision... She was in magnificent voice and her sheer joy in performing was contagious.” The Independent lauded the soprano’s vocal characterization as “spot on” and wrote that her singing was “not just fabulous but meaningful”. Covent Garden’s Manon runs through July 10, and Netrebko will take the role to Japan on tour with the Royal Opera House this September.

  • Anna Netrebko honors German Chancellor

    Published: 10 February 2010

Anna Netrebko presented the prestigious German Media Award to German Chancellor Angela Merkel during a festive ceremony in Baden-Baden, Germany on February 9, 2010. The prize had previously been awarded to personalities such as Nelson Mandela, Bono and Hillary Clinton. In addition to presenting the prize, Anna also performed Richard Strauss’ “Caecilie”. In her acceptance speech, Chancellor Angela Merkel thanked Anna personally in Russian and then added the following (in German):

It is a real honor—and I say this out of true belief—to receive a congratulatory speech from Anna Netrebko. Here in Germany we are fascinated by her and by her art. Looking at the two of us one can see that God assigns talents very differently. I just want to say that when I saw and heard Anna Netrebko in La Traviata in Salzburg, as well as on many other occasions, I was captivated by her over and over again. A critic in San Francisco wrote of her debut in the USA: "Here is a singer who simply has it all: a voice of astounding purity, precision and scope, extensive dynamic and tonal range, imagination, insight and wit—all combined with a dazzling charisma." That says it all about Anna Netrebko, and she has not even received the [German Media Award] yet. So thank you very much for your congratulatory speech, and we are already looking ahead.
